DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Kate Harwood on Monday 21st February 2022 at 2.30pm on Zoom\nThe Hemel Town Centre garden Jellicoe laid out along the river Gade has been restored.\nThis is the story of its design\, execution\, decline and renaissance \nHemel Hempstead was the third post-war New Town designated. Geoffrey Jellicoe was initially commissioned to design the whole of the new town but in the end designed only the town centre garden which was not completed until 1961. Some of his ideas\, influences and concepts\, as seen in his other works can be seen in Hemel and this talk also looks outside of the water garden to understand why it is as it is. \nKate Harwood is Planning and Conservation Officer for Hertfordshire Gardens Trust and has researched these gardens. SUMMARY:Winter Talk - The Swiss Garden – Restorations of a Regency Gem
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Corinne Price \nThe Swiss Garden was created by Lord Ongley in the 1820s in the “Swiss Picturesque” style and boasts 13 listed buildings and artefacts within its 9-acre grounds. Embellished with Victorian features during the 1870s by Joseph Shuttleworth\, the garden and its buildings sit within the wider landscape of Old Warden Park\, Bedfordshire\, an early 19th century Grade II listed parkland. The garden is a rare and complete example of a late Regency landscape in the UK\, as many of the delicate structures in other gardens dating from this period have not survived.\nThe Swiss Garden has recently been extensively restored thanks to a £2.8 million Heritage Lottery grant\, and as a result was removed from the Heritage at Risk register in 2014.\nCorinne’s talk will cover the garden’s history and current management goals\, highlighting various interventions and embellishments that have been carried out during its lifespan of almost 200 years.\nCorinne is the Garden Heritage & Audience Development Manager for the Shuttleworth Trust’s Swiss Garden. She trained in Cardiff’s parks and green spaces before securing a gardening post with the National Trust in north Wales at a small\, sheltered garden overlooking the sea. A subsequent role as Upper Gardens Manager for English Heritage at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire involved being part of a large-scale garden restoration project and mentoring thirteen garden apprentices over four years. Corinne has managed the Shuttleworth Trust’s Swiss Garden for the last seven years\, is a committee member for Bedfordshire Gardens Trust and in 2018 launched the Bedfordshire Head Gardeners’ Network. As such it is the most successful of the two Garden Cities in England\, a forerunner of the New Towns and much post-war planning. Unfortunately\, it has worked so well that the name ‘Garden – city\, village\, suburb’ has been hijacked by cynical governments dispensing diktats from Whitehall. As there will be a Gardens Trust conference in Welwyn Garden City on the development and future of the town (25 July 2020)\, this talk will concentrate on the town at present and the plans for its future and that of the surrounding hinterland – Howard’s Green Belt – which is being eroded to fill ‘Objectively Assessed Need’ for housing.

SUMMARY:Reading Historic Documents with Dr Heather Falvey
DESCRIPTION:The Herts Gardens Trust has organised two sessions with expert palaeography tutor Dr Heather Falvey for anyone who would like to learn how to read documents written in the 16th-18th centuries.  The two sessions will cover different aspects of the subject.  They will be at Woolmer Green Village Hall\, a fortnight apart\, on Thursday 24 October and Thursday 7 November from 10am to 12 noon.  Numbers will be limited so that everyone can sit at a desk. \nThe charge will be £6 per session\, payable at the start of each class. DESCRIPTION:Departure from Stanborough Green\, Welwyn Garden City 9.00am \nOur first visit is to the Old Rectory at Quinton. This is a beautiful contemporary garden of 3 acres designed by multi-award winning designer\, Anoushka Feiler. Throughout the garden there are associations with its 18th century ecclesiastical origins: parterres\, topiary and long walks\, contrasting with 21st century features: modern materials\, new planting methods and abstract installations.\nSadly\, the Old Rectory cannot provide refreshment\, but have suggested that members may like to bring their own flasks of coffee and sit in the garden. A two-course lunch will be taken at the Boat Inn\, Stoke Bruern. Our afternoon visit is to the Menagerie Garden at Horton. The Grade II* listed mid-18th century house\, built as a folly for the 2nd Earl Halifax\, was rescued from dereliction in 1972 by Gervase Jackson-Stops. Jackson-Stops and successive generations of owners have created a remarkable Rococo Revival garden around the house\, complete with thatched arbours\, a shell grotto featuring Orpheus-in-the-Underworld\, and elegant planting within its formal layout. Starting with the magnificent view from the front façade of the South Avenue\, we will take in different eras of its landscape history as we explore the park. We will cross over the lakes to visit the Folly\, created in 1768 and walk as far as the Belts designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. DESCRIPTION:Walk to be led by Kate Harwood – Meet at 11.0am at Moorgate Tube Station\, London \nThe original Barbican development included provision for a high walk but only part of this was built at the time. This has now been completed. We will first visit Salters Hall garden\, originally laid out by David Hicks\, and the very new St Alphage garden next to it\, then along the High Walk\, looking at the planting along it to the Barbican and the gardens there. A pit stop in the Barbican and then a look at the revamped Beech Gardens\, where Nigel Dunnett won a Landscape Institute Award in 2018. We end at the Charterhouse\, where there are plenty of places round Smithfield for lunch and easy access to Farringdon Tube and Thameslink station. Charterhouse has recently been opened to the public and the chapel etc. can be viewed. The newly planted forecourt can be seen\, but the courtyard gardens to the rear are private. I think Pashley Manor is one of the most beautiful gardens in England. We will leave Stanborough Green at 9.00am and hope to arrive at approximately 11.30am for coffee and a tray-bake.\nI have not organised lunch as we shall be free to wander the gardens\, where the roses will be at their best.\nLunch will be at your own expense and if the weather is favourable can be taken on the terrace or otherwise in the excellent Garden Room café. Because the garden is large (11 acres) I have organised just the visit to Pashley Manor\, where there is a plant sale area\, a gift shop and an exhibition of sculpture around the garden. DESCRIPTION:Walk to be led by Tina Rowland – Meet at High Leigh Conference Centre\, Hoddesden \nThis walk will explore the former High Leigh Estate and Barclay Park in Hoddesdon to see evidence of the work done by the firm of James Pulham and Son of Broxbourne. Tina Rowland has recently researched this site and she will show us surviving features\, including a grotto and cave\, all believed to be by the Pulhams. High Leigh has been described as ‘probably one of the best\, if not the best Pulham site in Hertfordshire\, in terms of accessibility\, variety and extent of remains. ‘\nThe High Leigh mansion and 40 acres of the grounds were sold to First Conference Estate Ltd in 1922. In the 1930s the Barclay family gave the gift of the estate’s former parkland to the town of Hoddesdon as an amenity space named Barclay Park and it opened in 1937. Smaller areas of land were conveyed in 1954 giving a park area of about 18 acres. \nMembers are responsible for their own transport and refreshments. Set in 20 acres of mature woodland\,\nthis magnificent garden is a plantsman’s paradise.\nProfessionally designed by its owner\, Fiona Edmund\, the land is laid out as a series of structured gardens displaying a huge range of unusual trees\, shrubs\, perennials and bulbs. After lunch taken at Green Island Gardens we drive to Polstead Mill Gardens at Polstead in Suffolk. Here the garden has been developed since 2002. It has formal and informal areas\, with a wild- flower meadow and a large\, productive kitchen garden. The River Box flows through the garden with a mill pond developed as a water garden.
