SUMMARY:Orchards; a brief history from the Garden of Eden till today
DESCRIPTION:Hertfordshire Gardens Trust are delighted to be holding our first talk of the season jointly with Bedfordshire Gardens Trust at Luton Hoo.  This richly illustrated talk is presented by Kate Harwood and will be free to all members and friends of the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Gardens Trusts. Book now using the link to Eventbrite below. \nFrom the Garden of Eden and the earliest evidence of orchards at Pasargadae (6th century BC) to the development of community orchards of today\, fruit trees have exercised a hold over people. Not only  are they an essential to a good diet\, they also were believed to have mystical properties and a great deal of religious significance. By the time of the Puritans in the 17th century\, the idea of profit plus pleasure\, as exemplified by orchards\, was being promoted. This talk will  cover this history with  diversions to  jam factories and development of cider orchards\, the explosion of varieties in the 19th century\, and the government interventions which  reversed this.

SUMMARY:Coach Trip to Benton End and Beth Chatto’s Garden
DESCRIPTION:The coach will leave the “Old London Road Car Park\, Hertford\, SG13 7LA” at 8:30am for travel to Benton End House & Garden\, Hadleigh\, Suffolk\, IP7 5JR. \nhttps://bentonend.co.uk/ \nThe house and garden are in the process of revival following its heyday during Morris’s lifetime\, so this visit will provide the opportunity to view work in progress. This is an ambitious project and it is anticipated the first phase will be the re-opening of the walled garden in 2026. The visit will be split in two parts with half the group taking a tour around the house by Matthew Hodges\, Manager of the Trust\, focussing on some history of the 16C building\, with the main focus on Cedric and his partner’s Arthur Lett-Haine’s time here 1940-1982. Benton End is a Grade II* listed 16th century\, half-timbered house\, situated on the edge of the historic market town of Hadleigh\, Suffolk\, overlooking the Brett Valley. The garden portion of the tour will focus on the history of Cedric’s garden and the ongoing revival. There is a break halfway through for a cuppa and a biscuit and then the groups swap over. House tours take approximately 50 mins as do the garden tours \nThe coach will then take us to Beth Chatto Gardens\, Elmstead Market\, Essex\, CO7 7DB. \nhttps://www.bethchatto.co.uk/ \nHere we will be able to get refreshments at the café and have time to visit her famous garden and plant nursery. Beth Chatto OBE was an award-winning plantswoman\, author and lecturer. Her work here at the Gardens began in 1960. She took an overgrown wasteland of brambles\, parched gravel and boggy ditches\, transforming it using plants adapted by nature to thrive in different conditions: right plant\, right place. An inspirational\, informal garden has developed. \nWe will leave Beth Chatto late afternoon and should be back in Hertford about 6:00pm \nThe cost is £75 per person to include travel\, morning coffee\, garden entrance at Benton End and Beth Chatto’s Garden. \nSpecial “Early Birds” offer\, from the 1st to the 17th March this trip can be booked for £70.00 per person. Booking is via the Eventbrite link below.

SUMMARY:The Rothschild Orchids by Francesca Murray
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker Francesca Murray presents the story of the Rothschild family’s passion for orchids at Gunnersbury\, Tring Park and at Exbury. \nThe story begins at Gunnersbury (the first Rothschild garden in England) where Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild published a catalogue of her own rare orchids from around the world. Cultivating these strange exotics in the Gunnersbury glasshouses was highly experimental and devoted head gardeners shared their findings between the family estates. Nathaniel de Rothschild and his son – the famous zoologist Walter Rothschild – took up orchidology at Tring Park too. Leopold’s son\, Lionel (1882-1942)\, developed his first garden at the age of 5\, and took Gunnersbury orchids and rhododendrons with him to his new garden at Exbury\, Hampshire\, in 1919. There his experiments in the scientific field of orchid hybridisation had resulted in a fine collection of 28\,000 plants by World War II. \nThis astonishing story provides a glimpse of how the Rothschilds’ investment in their gardens paid off for the benefit of the wider gardening community and is not to be missed! \nPhoto credit Rothschild Archive London \nTo book the event please use the link to Eventbrite below\, ticket prices are £5.00 for members and £10.00 for non-members

SUMMARY:Prince Pickle and his German Gardens…and English Heiresses
DESCRIPTION:Kate Harwood will introduce us to a German prince with a passion for gardening and his search for an English heiress \n \nPrince Pickle – or Fürst Hermann von Pückler-Muskau to give him his full title – was a Prussian nobleman whose great passion was gardening. He transformed his estate in Muskau and did the same again at Branitz. He also laid out landscapes for the Prussian royal family and others. He travelled round Europe looking at parks and gardens and was very influenced by Humphry Repton\, visiting many of his sites here in England. His influence spread across the Atlantic andlandscape architect\, Charles Eliot called him the greatest landscape designer of the 19th century. Having spent all his money on improving Muskau he thought the only way to restore his fortune was to marry an heiress – plenty in England so that’s where he went – having first divorced his wife. However\, the heiresses were either not rich enough or their families put a stop to proceedings\, and he came home without the fortune. One suspects that the prospect of having a menage-a-trois at Muskau with his ex-wife was also not appealing. He turned to book writing and travelled in north Africa. He eventually had to sell Muskau and retire to modest Brantiz – where he began gardening all over again. This talk looks at his gardens\, his adventures in Europe and Africa and his surprising legacy. \nKate Harwood has taught Garden History at Birkbeck\, University of London. She is now a writer\, lecturer\, researcher and campaigner on historic gardens and is Conservation & Planning officer for Hertfordshire Gardens Trust. \nPicture credits: Babelsberg Rosary by Kate Harwood

SUMMARY:A Landscape History of Cassiobury presented by Laurie Elvin
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAfter a brief introduction to the geology\, prehistory and the monastic history of Cassiobury\, the talk will focus on the changes through the ownerships of the Morison family\, the Commonwealth and the Capell family. It was the seat of the Earls of Essex (the Capells) from 1668\, who employed architects Hugh May and James Wyatt and landscape advisors: Moses Cook\, Charles Bridgeman\, Humphry Repton and James Wright. Many artists were invited to depict the estate\, including: A.C. Pugin\, J.M.W. Turner\, W.H. Hunt and J. Hassell. In 1922 the estate was sold for development and partly bought by Watford Council\, forming the present 600-acre public park. A summary of the changes in the last 115 years will conclude the talk. \nTickets are available through Eventbrite using the link below: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-landscape-history-of-cassiobury-presented-by-laurie-elvin-tickets-1042197238997?aff=ebemoffollowpublishemail&ref=eemail&utm_campaign=following_published_event&utm_content=follow_notification&utm_medium=email&utm_source=eventbrite \nPlease address any enquiries to zoomevents@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk

SUMMARY:The Gardens at St Paul’s Waldenbury
DESCRIPTION:The gardens\, which contain several Grade 1 listed features were laid out in the early 17th century as woodland with temples and statues. The patte d’oie\, or goose foot design of avenues with connecting allées\, allow views which flow out into the surrounding countryside.\nEdward Gilbert bought the estate in 1700\, building the house in 1730 and had the formal pleasure grounds constructed in the adjacent woodland. His daughter\, Mary Bowes inherited and employed James Payne to extend the house. Her daughter\, Mary Eleanor\, married John Lyon\, the 9th earl of Strathmore. She was a renowned botanist and would have helped to improve the gardens. The Estate has remained in the Bowes Lyon family throughout the decades.\nThe gardens and pleasure grounds were restored in the 1930s to the 1960 with work done by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1975 and 1992. The gardens lay largely to the north of the house although the 1975 garden\, enclosed by a brick wall\, lies adjacent to the south front and a small herb garden\, designed by Jellicoe in 1992 is on the west side. From the centre of the 18th century north terrace the lawn slopes down to the 3 formal grass allées leading into the Walk Wood. Although renowned for its spring flowers\, the garden has much else to offer. \nThere will be a guided walk and a glass of wine on the terrace beforehand. \nThe cost of the visit is £15/£17 for non-members. Please contact Richard Haydon on zoomevents@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk to register an interest and he will send you the details of how to pay. \nYou may like to  read Tom Stuart-Smith’s account of his visit on Instagram.

SUMMARY:The Swiss Garden
DESCRIPTION:Following a successful Zoom lecture for us during lockdown\, we are very pleased that Corinne Price will take us on a guided walk round the Swiss Garden\, belonging to the Shuttleworth Collection near Biggleswade. Created in the 1820s for Lord Ongley\, this nine-acre site was designed in the in the ‘Swiss Picturesque’ style and is the best surviving example of a Regency garden in the country.  It was developed further in the 1870s by Joseph Shuttleworth\, who added a Grotto and artificial Pulhamite rock cascades. After the Second World War the garden went into a period of decay but thanks to a multi-million Heritage Lottery Fund grant\, it was restored ten years ago\, as were the thirteen listed buildings and structures\, using traditional materials and techniques.\nA two-storey thatched Swiss cottage is the focal point of the garden\, with other features including an Indian Kiosk\, the Pulhamite Grotto and Fernery\, wrought iron bridges and arches and a dog cemetery\, all linked by serpentine paths\, which artfully reveal their vistas along woodland paths and through grassy glades.\nThe site opens at 10 am and there is parking by the hangars or near the visitor centre and cafe. We will meet our guide\, Corinne at 10 .30 by the Pond Gate entrance to the garden\, where visitors are directed after entry to the shop and café.\nThe tour will last approximately an hour and a half and your ticket gives you access to the whole 60 acre parkland site\, the Shuttleworth Collection of early aircraft\, cars\, busses and motorbikes and in addition entitles you to return within 30 days\, plus we get a complimentary voucher for hot drinks.\nDirections to Shuttleworth – Two miles west of A1 at Biggleswade.\nPostal Address\nAlder Drive\nBiggleswade\nBedfordshire \nFor Satnav use SG18 9DT \nThe cost of the visit is £21 for Members and £23 for non-members. \nRichard Haydon will be handling the bookings so please can you register your interest with him via zoomevents@hertsgardenstrust.org.uk and he will send you details of how to pay.

SUMMARY:Study Day - Charles Bridgeman: Pioneer of the Naturalistic Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Despite being a popular designer in the early 18th century\, Bridgeman’s place in garden history and many of his landscapes remained neglected over time. Although not so well-known as his illustrious successors\, Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton\, Bridgeman can be safely claimed as the first landscape designer of note to adopt a more naturalistic style of park and garden design. He became well-known in his day for redesigning the large estates of the wealthy as well as the Royal Parks and Gardens. Although he is most famous for popularising the ha-ha\, now exciting new discoveries have come to light and this day will seek to illuminate his progressive contribution to the transition from the formal designs of the 17th century to the freer and naturalistic designed landscapes of the 18th. \nThe morning will consist of 3\, 45-minute talks and a Q&A session. Sue Haynes\, whose new book on Bridgeman is due out on 12th December\, will give us an overview of Bridgeman’s work; Jenny Milledge will talk about his work in Hertfordshire and Anne Rowe will describe the exciting discoveries made at some Bridgeman sites in the county. \nThe venue is the delightful Hastoe Village Hall which was built for the villagers by Alice Rothschild of Tring Park and is in walking distance of the Ridgeway Path which leads to the famous rond point\, restored after careful research by HGT and reopening magnificent views over the Park. \nA buffet/sandwich lunch will be provided and there will be plenty of tea and coffee available. After lunch a guided walk of approx. 1 hour\, 30 mins/2 hours along the Ridgeway path to view the work in Tring Park will be offered. Transport will be available from the station in Tring to the Hall. There is parking available at the hall itself. \nThe cost is £45 (£50 for non members) and tickets can be bought from Eventbrite here.

SUMMARY:Visit to Luton Hoo Walled Garden
DESCRIPTION:This stunning five-acre octagonal walled garden at the heart of the Luton Hoo Estate was designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the late 1760s for John Stuart\, 3rd Earl of Bute. Bute was a friend and briefly Prime Minister to George 3rd and a noted botanist. Over the intervening centuries the garden evolved and reflected the changing horticultural fashions of the day but fell into decline in the late 20th century\, before the Walled Garden Volunteer Project was set up\, to halt the neglect. Since 2001 teams of volunteer gardeners and researchers have revitalised the garden\, repaired and conserved a range of glass houses and service buildings and discovered the rich history of the garden.\n \nThe visit will start at 10.30.am when we meet our guide at the walled garden. We will hear a short talk\, giving us an overview of the garden’s history and then we will see the many changes made since the project started and the latest conservation work that has been carried out. After the tour\, at about 12 noon\, the Woodyard Coffee Shop will be open for anyone who would like to purchase light refreshments.\nDirections:\nPlease note: there is no access from Luton Hoo Hotel entrance\, use postcode LU1 4LF. \nRichard Haydon will be handling the bookings so please can you register your interest with him via zoomevents@hertsgardenstrust.co.uk and he will send you details of how to pay.

SUMMARY:The Garden at Temple Dinsley: The genius of Sir Edwin Lutyens
DESCRIPTION:Temple Dinsley has a long and varied history from the settlement of the Knight’s Templar in the 12th century. It is at present being converted into private flats and dwellings. The highlight of the garden’s history is the work carried out by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Fenwick family\, starting in 1909. The planting may be by\, and certainly is in the spirit of\, Gertrude Jekyll. \nDr Diana Kingham is a garden designer and garden historian and was involved with the HGT replanting of the formal Rose Garden in 1990s. She has carried out a detailed survey of the formal gardens and co-operated with local architects to produce a detailed report for the English Heritage Pilot Scheme for Historic Parks and Gardens. \nTickets are available from Eventbrite here.

SUMMARY:William Wilshere\, a Hitchin lawyer\, and his garden 1790-1824 Presented by Bridget Howlett
DESCRIPTION:This talk is based on William Wilshere’s Farm and Gardening Memoranda\, spanning the years 1809 to 1824\, supplemented by information from his cash books\, bills and a journal and planting book started by his gardener\, James Bowie\, in 1812. Bowie left Wilshere in August 1814 when he was sent by Sir Joseph Banks on a plant hunting expedition to Brazil.\nWilshere’s purchase in 1801 of a substantial share in Samuel Whitbread’s brewery provided him with a large income. In his extensive garden he built a peach house\, cultivated exotic fruit and flowers and a wide range of vegetables\, as well as raising thousands of trees\, quick thorn\, and shrubs in his tree nursery\, both for his own estates and for sale to owners of landscape parks. \nBridget Howlett enjoyed a long career as an archivist at London Metropolitan Archives and has lived in Hitchin for over forty years. She is a member of the Hertfordshire Gardens Trust and the Hitchin Historical Society and has written and talked on the town’s past. William Wilshere’s Hitchin Garden and Farm 1809-1824 is expected to be published in 2023. \nPlease note that:\n• Tickets for the talks at Woolmer Green Village Hall can only be purchased online via Eventbrite and will not be available on the door. Each event capacity is 40.\n• Doors will open at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start and refreshments will only be available before the talk starts.\n• Unfortunately\, it will not be possible to record the ‘live’ lectures.

SUMMARY:Bandstands: History\, Decline and Revival Presented by Paul Rabbitts
DESCRIPTION:The Gardens Trust is interested in the conservation and use of public parks and gardens as well as private estates and in this talk\, Paul Rabbitts discusses the origin and history of the bandstand and the development of its use throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods. After a sad decline\, there seems to be a revival in their use and our hope is that this will go alongside emerging movements formulated to look after and save our public parks.\nPaul’s talk is highly illustrative and comes recommended by previous appreciative audiences.\nPaul Rabbitts is currently Head of Parks for Norwich City Council and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is the author of many books and his latest\, due out at the end of the year is called The People’s Parks – The Design and Development of Public Parks in Britain \nTickets are available to purchase on here on Bandstands – History\, Decline and Revival presented by Paul Rabbitts Tickets\, Mon 6 Nov 2023 at 14:15 | Eventbrite \nPlease note that:\n• Tickets for the talks at Woolmer Green Village Hall can only be purchased online via Eventbrite and will not be available on the door.
